Odisha to require ₹1.1 trillion for renewable energy infrastructure expansion

Odisha faces an infrastructure investment challenge as it seeks to expand renewable energy generation and modernize its power systems over the next decade, according to analysis by energy policy researchers. The state will require approximately ₹1.1 trillion to achieve its renewable energy ambitions, which centre on adding 10.7 gigawatts of renewable power capacity by 2035-36.

Beyond capacity additions, the state's energy transformation will demand significant investment in complementary infrastructure. Pumped storage hydroelectric systems and battery storage installations are essential to manage intermittency from renewable sources, while transmission network upgrades will be critical to integrate new generation capacity and ensure grid stability across Odisha.

The findings underscore the financial scale of India's energy transition, particularly for individual states seeking to balance climate goals with infrastructure development. For Odisha, a state with substantial coal reserves and existing thermal generation capacity, the shift toward renewables represents both an economic opportunity and an infrastructure imperative.

The investment requirements highlight the need for coordinated planning between state authorities, central government initiatives, and private sector participation to finance and implement the necessary infrastructure projects. Meeting these targets will position Odisha as a significant contributor to India's broader renewable energy expansion programme.
