Officials identify 219 vulnerable sites ahead of Northeast monsoon season

Municipal officials have completed a comprehensive survey to identify 219 vulnerable locations susceptible to damage during the Northeast monsoon season, according to a statement from the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Commissioner. The exercise is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen disaster management protocols and ensure timely intervention in flood-prone and structurally weak areas.

The identified sites include low-lying residential areas, drainage systems requiring maintenance, and infrastructure points prone to waterlogging. Officials stated that the mapping exercise enables authorities to prioritize resources and plan preventive measures before the monsoon onset.

With the Northeast monsoon typically commencing in October, civic bodies across the region are accelerating preparedness activities. The GCC and allied departments are coordinating on desilting operations, repairs to stormwater drains, and awareness campaigns to help residents prepare for heavy rainfall.

Authorities have advised residents in identified vulnerable zones to take necessary precautions, including clearing drainage outlets and ensuring proper water management around their premises. Officials will conduct regular monitoring of these 219 locations during the monsoon period and maintain emergency response readiness.
