Officials inspect encroached catchment areas at Anayirankal dam in Kerala
Authorities have launched an inspection of government land in the Chinnakkanal region following reports of widespread encroachment in the catchment area of the Anayirankal dam and nearby 301 Colony. The action comes after the Forest department raised concerns about illegal occupation of state property.

Officials from multiple departments visited the affected areas in Chinnakkanal to assess the extent of encroachment on government land surrounding the Anayirankal dam and the 301 Colony settlement. The inspection was prompted by a formal report submitted by the Forest department to the Revenue department documenting large-scale illegal occupation of protected catchment areas.
The catchment regions around dams are critical for maintaining water quality and ensuring the sustainability of water resources. Encroachment in these sensitive areas poses environmental risks and can compromise the structural integrity and operational efficiency of water infrastructure.
The interdepartmental inspection aims to document the nature and scale of encroachments and determine appropriate remedial action. Officials are expected to prepare a comprehensive report detailing violations and recommend measures to reclaim government land and prevent further illegal occupation.
The initiative reflects growing concerns in Kerala about unauthorized land use in ecologically sensitive zones. Authorities have intensified efforts to protect government land and natural resources from encroachment, particularly in areas designated for environmental conservation and public infrastructure.
