Ohio protects 58 farms through agricultural easement programme
Ohio has approved conservation easements covering 5,165 acres of farmland across 58 family-owned farms, bringing total protected agricultural land in the state to over 111,000 acres. Ohio's Local Agricultural Easement Purchase Programme has granted approval for easements on 58 family-owned farms, expanding the state's commitment to farmland conservation. The newly protected acres bring the total protected farmland across Ohio to more than 111,000 acres spanning 62 counties.
Under the programme, participating farmers retain ownership and cultivation rights to their land while entering into permanent conservation easements. These legal agreements prevent conversion of agricultural properties to non-farm uses, ensuring productive farmland remains available for future generations of agricultural operations.
The easement approvals represent a collaborative effort between local sponsors and state agricultural authorities to balance farming operations with land preservation. By enabling farmers to maintain economic viability while protecting their properties, the programme addresses growing pressures on agricultural land throughout the state.
State officials have indicated that enhanced federal funding will support expanded conservation efforts in coming years. Local sponsors are being encouraged to prepare applications for the 2027 programme cycle, with expectations that additional farmland will be brought under protection through the initiative.
