Oil India Ltd. announced Friday that it has successfully discovered natural gas in the Matsyapuri formation within the Krishna-Godavari Basin, a previously unappraised zone located off India's eastern seaboard. The discovery was made in the Godavari-1 appraisal well within the KG-DSF/GSKW/2018 shallow-water offshore block, which the state-run explorer had secured through recent Discovered Small Field bid rounds.
Testing of the hydrocarbon-bearing zone, located at a depth of 2,024 to 2,027 metres, commenced on October 16, 2026. The well demonstrated consistent production capability, flowing gas at approximately 100,000 Standard Cubic Metres Per Day during testing operations, with peak flows reaching 200,000 SCMD. Additionally, the discovery yielded condensate production of around 170 barrels per day.
Oil India said it is preparing to conduct testing of an additional higher zone within the same well structure. The company did not provide preliminary assessments of the total recoverable reserves or commercial viability of the discovery at this stage. The find adds to India's offshore gas resources at a time when the nation seeks to enhance domestic hydrocarbon production to meet growing energy demands.
