During discussions held earlier this month, representatives from India's automotive and ethanol production industries met with government officials to discuss strategies for expanding the use of flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs) in the country. The oil ministry, keen to leverage ethanol as a renewable fuel alternative, has now sought detailed implementation plans from automakers regarding their commitment to FFV launches.
Automakers and ethanol producers presented their case for enhanced policy backing, highlighting the potential of flex-fuel technology to reduce India's dependence on imported crude oil while simultaneously boosting the domestic ethanol sector. The industry representatives urged both the central government and state administrations to create a supportive regulatory environment that would facilitate faster market penetration of FFVs.
Flex-fuel vehicles are designed to run on a blend of petrol and ethanol, with ethanol typically derived from agricultural feedstock. India has significant agricultural capacity to produce ethanol, making FFV technology an attractive option for meeting renewable fuel targets and supporting rural economies.
