Crude oil prices retreated across major benchmarks Tuesday as optimism over possible US-Iran negotiations weighed on sentiment in energy markets. Brent Crude, the international benchmark, slipped 1.82% to settle at $111.36 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate, the US standard, fell 2% to $102.05 per barrel.
The decline reflects investor expectations that a diplomatic breakthrough could ease geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and potentially increase global oil supplies. Reports suggesting renewed talks between the United States and Iran have raised hopes of resolving long-standing sanctions disputes that have constrained Iranian crude exports for years.
Meanwhile, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies, collectively known as OPEC+, signalled stability by maintaining their existing production targets. The group's decision to hold course suggests confidence in current market management strategies despite the recent price weakness.
Analysts noted that crude prices remain relatively elevated by historical standards, with both benchmarks sustaining levels above $100 per barrel. Market participants are closely monitoring diplomatic developments and upcoming economic data that could influence energy demand expectations in coming weeks.
