Oil prices slip as Europe releases diesel reserves following US pressure

Brent crude fell 1.76 per cent to settle at $100.50 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) dropped 2.18 per cent to $90.85 in afternoon trading. The decline reflected market relief following the European agreement to release additional diesel reserves into the market.

The coordinated drawdown of strategic fuel stockpiles represents a significant intervention in global energy markets. European governments, under pressure from the United States, opted to bolster diesel supplies amid persistent concerns over fuel availability and price volatility in the region.

Diesel shortages have emerged as a key constraint on European energy security, with supplies tightening across key industrial economies. The release of reserves is expected to help stabilise prices and ensure adequate supplies for heating and transportation sectors heading into winter months.

The move underscores ongoing geopolitical factors influencing global commodity markets. Crude prices have remained volatile amid supply chain disruptions and shifting energy dynamics, with strategic reserves increasingly deployed to manage market pressures and support economic stability.
