GUAR MUSANG, Oct 12 — The National Registration Department has reassured Malaysians that old birth certificates, including handwritten documents issued on paper, continue to hold legal validity and do not require replacement.
The clarification comes as the NRD seeks to address public concerns about the status of older birth certificate formats following the introduction of modern registration systems. Officials confirmed that citizens can continue to use their existing certificates for all official purposes without legal impediment.
For those who wish to obtain replacement copies due to damage, loss, or wear, the NRD offers the service at a nominal fee of RM5 per certificate. The affordable replacement option is designed to provide citizens with accessible alternatives while maintaining the validity of their original documents.
The NRD's announcement underscores its commitment to simplifying administrative procedures for the public. Citizens are advised that no urgency exists to replace functioning birth certificates, and replacements should be pursued only when necessary for practical reasons.
