Olympic medallists unopposed as IOA elections proceed
LSN India ·
Olympic medallists Gagan Narang, Vijender Singh, Yogeshwar Dutt and Kamlesh Mehta secured their positions as male Sportspersons of Merit (SOMs) on Saturday without facing opposition in the Indian Olympic Association elections.
The unopposed election of the four athletes, who have represented India at Olympic Games, streamlined one segment of the IOA electoral process. Their nominations were accepted by the election committee, enabling their direct appointment to the merit category.
The SOM positions are reserved for athletes who have achieved distinction at the Olympic stage. The four athletes bring together achievements across shooting, boxing and wrestling disciplines, reflecting India's medal-winning heritage in these sports.
While the SOM elections proceeded without contest, other positions within the IOA leadership elections have generated considerable competition. The overall electoral process is expected to shape the governance direction of India's national Olympic body during a significant period for Indian sports.
