MANILA — Top officials are tightening oversight of government fuel usage, citing widespread concerns about misappropriation by public servants. Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla said Thursday that the practice of using state-allocated gas for personal vehicles undermines public trust and drains resources meant for legitimate government operations.

The warning was prompted by the recent dismissal of a local official found guilty of converting government fuel allocations to private use. Remulla emphasized that such infractions carry serious consequences and damage the credibility of the bureaucracy.

"Acts like this destroy the image of the government," Remulla stated, signaling that his office will continue investigating similar cases and pursuing disciplinary action against violators.

The directive underscores renewed efforts by the Ombudsman to enforce accountability standards across the public sector. Officials found guilty of fuel misappropriation face potential dismissal, alongside other administrative penalties. The Office of the Ombudsman called on agencies to strengthen internal controls over fuel distribution and maintain accurate records of vehicle allocations to prevent future abuses.
