Ombudsman-DBM deal to speed up corruption investigations

MANILA — Corruption investigators will gain swifter access to government procurement data under a fresh accord between the Office of the Ombudsman and the Procurement Service-Department of Budget and Management, potentially removing bottlenecks in anti-graft operations.

Under the agreement, Ombudsman personnel can now conduct faster reviews of the Philippine Government Electronic Procurement System (PhilGEPS) and inspect government contracts in real time to identify potential irregularities. The arrangement streamlines what previously required lengthy approval processes, enabling investigators to detect anomalies more promptly.

The pact addresses longstanding procedural delays that have hindered corruption investigations, particularly those involving large-scale government contracts and procurement transactions. By granting the Ombudsman's office direct and expedited access to critical procurement records, the cooperation framework aims to strengthen the government's anti-corruption mechanisms.

Both agencies have positioned the agreement as part of broader efforts to improve transparency and accountability in public procurement, a sector traditionally vulnerable to graft and irregular transactions.
