Ombudsman Urges Supreme Court to Tighten Bail Rules for Graft Convicts

The Ombudsman has criticized the judiciary for what it characterizes as excessive leniency toward graft convicts, urging the Supreme Court to assume a more active policing role over bail decisions made by lower courts. Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla said on Saturday that courts have granted bail too readily at the discretion of judges in lower echelons, undermining accountability measures meant to safeguard the integrity of corruption convictions.
Remulla's statement reflects growing concerns within anti-corruption agencies regarding inconsistencies in how graft cases are handled across the country's court system. The remarks suggest that bail decisions for individuals convicted of graft offenses warrant closer scrutiny to ensure judicial consistency and prevent cases where convicts evade accountability through lenient bail arrangements.
The Ombudsman's call for intervention comes as the Judicial and Bar Council announced proceedings related to judicial appointments on the same day, signaling renewed focus on governance and accountability within the judiciary. Officials have not yet indicated whether the Supreme Court will adopt the Ombudsman's recommendations or establish new guidelines governing bail decisions in graft-related convictions.
