One dead after landslide buries Penang home; two residents escape

GEORGE TOWN — Rescue officials in Penang confirmed Monday that one resident died after a landslide engulfed a house in the Paya Terubong area, with two other inhabitants safely evacuating before the disaster struck.

The Penang Fire and Rescue Department responded to the incident, which saw the hillside give way and impact the structure. Emergency teams worked to secure the scene and account for all persons in and around the property at the time of the collapse.

The two residents who escaped the landslide were among those present when the geological hazard occurred. Authorities did not immediately provide additional details regarding the circumstances leading to the slope failure or the identities of those involved.

Landslides pose a recurring hazard across Malaysia's hilly and mountainous regions, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall. The incident underscores ongoing concerns about geological stability in residential areas built on or near steep terrain throughout the peninsula.
