Saudi Arabia's Civil Aviation Authority confirmed Thursday that one person was killed and eight others wounded in the late Wednesday assault on King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, located in the kingdom's Eastern Province near the Persian Gulf. The authority said the airport sustained material damage in the attack, prompting flight-tracking service Flightradar24 to report that aircraft were being diverted away from the facility.
The Saudi-led military coalition said it intercepted four drone attacks in the Eastern region during the incident. King Fahd Airport has been targeted multiple times in recent months as part of a broader campaign of strikes against major Saudi aviation facilities.
While the Iranian-backed Houthi movement has not claimed responsibility for this attack, the group has previously launched missiles and drone strikes against Saudi airports and infrastructure. The assault comes shortly after Saudi Arabia's Energy Ministry reported that debris from an intercepted drone killed two people and injured two others at an oil field operated by Saudi Aramco in the country's southeastern region.
The incidents underscore ongoing security challenges facing the kingdom as regional tensions persist. Saudi Arabia has significantly bolstered air defenses at critical infrastructure sites to counter unmanned aerial threats.
