One-month-old baby allegedly sold for over Rs 3.5 lakh in Maharashtra

Authorities in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar have registered a case after uncovering an alleged human trafficking network involving the sale of a one-month-old child. According to police, the infant's parents sold the baby for an initial sum of Rs 1.20 lakh, with the proceeds used to purchase a smartphone.

Investigators revealed that the child was trafficked across state lines within 48 hours of the initial transaction. The infant was moved from Maharashtra through Nanded in the state before reaching Telangana, where authorities believe the trafficking chain continued.

The police investigation has uncovered a pattern of repeated sales, with the child reportedly changing hands multiple times at escalating prices. Following the initial sale, the infant was subsequently sold to different individuals for Rs 2.70 lakh and later for Rs 3.50 lakh, according to preliminary findings.

The case highlights gaps in child protection mechanisms and has prompted authorities to launch a broader investigation into potential networks involved in child trafficking in the region. Police have initiated steps to trace all individuals involved in the transactions and ensure the child's safe recovery and rehabilitation.
