The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board has granted permission for setting up a radiotherapy bunker at the cancer block of Government General Hospital in Kakinada, marking a significant step in expanding cancer treatment infrastructure in the region. Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan announced that ONGC would fund the ₹36.6 crore project to equip the facility with state-of-the-art radiotherapy equipment.
The initiative aims to provide advanced cancer treatment services to patients across Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring regions. Radiotherapy bunkers are specialised facilities designed to safely house radiotherapy equipment used in treating various forms of cancer, requiring strict regulatory compliance and safety standards.
The regulatory clearance from the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board underscores the technical viability and safety compliance of the proposed installation. The funding commitment from ONGC reflects corporate participation in strengthening public healthcare infrastructure in the state.
The development is expected to reduce patient dependence on private facilities for radiotherapy treatment and improve accessibility to cancer care services, particularly for economically disadvantaged patients. The project's completion would add to the oncology services currently available at GGH-Kakinada, one of the region's major government medical institutions.
