Only 30% of Filipinos feel empowered to combat corruption

MANILA — Findings from the Social Weather Stations' second quarter 2026 survey paint a sobering picture of public sentiment regarding individual agency in combating corruption, with the majority of respondents expressing a sense of powerlessness.

The survey released Thursday evening found that only 30 percent of Filipinos disagree with the statement that a person like themselves cannot do anything to reduce corruption in government. Conversely, 52 percent agreed with the sentiment of helplessness, indicating that more than half the population perceives corruption-fighting as beyond the reach of ordinary citizens.

These figures suggest a significant challenge for anti-corruption efforts in the country. Public participation and grassroots engagement are widely considered essential components of any sustained anti-corruption campaign, making the low confidence levels a potential impediment to systemic reform.

The results underscore the need for initiatives that can restore citizen confidence and demonstrate tangible avenues through which ordinary Filipinos might contribute to reducing corrupt practices at all levels of government.
