Only 6,000 Malaysians register with e-Konsular despite overseas travel boom
Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan has expressed concern over the low uptake of Malaysia's e-Konsular registration system, warning that poor participation hampers the government's ability to assist citizens abroad.

The e-Konsular platform has attracted just over 6,000 registrations since its launch in 2025, a figure that Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan described as insufficient given current travel patterns among Malaysians.
Hasan flagged the discrepancy between Malaysia's high international travel rates and the minimal use of the government's digital registration tool. The e-Konsular system is designed to maintain updated records of Malaysian citizens overseas, enabling the Foreign Ministry to provide timely assistance during emergencies or crises.
The low registration rate creates operational challenges for the ministry, limiting its capacity to effectively locate and support Malaysians in distress abroad. Without comprehensive data on citizen whereabouts, consular services face difficulties in coordinating evacuations, providing medical assistance, or offering other emergency support.
The Foreign Ministry has not yet announced specific measures to boost e-Konsular adoption, though Hasan's public comments suggest renewed focus on encouraging Malaysian travellers to register their details before departing the country.
