Opposition intensifies pressure on election chief as protests continue

Opposition parties have vowed to sustain their agitation against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar despite police action that resulted in the detention of hundreds of lawmakers over two consecutive days. The demonstrations reflect mounting tension between the opposition and the election administration over governance and institutional concerns.

On Tuesday, approximately 200 parliamentarians attempted to proceed towards Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to lodge their protest, only to encounter police barricades preventing their march. Among those held up by security cordons were Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, who were part of the broader contingent seeking to demonstrate their discontent.

The opposition movement, which has gathered considerable political momentum, centres on calls for Kumar's removal from his position as the country's top electoral official. The sustained nature of the protests indicates the depth of opposition objections to his administration of the election body.

Police presence at key protest sites has remained significant, with authorities implementing restrictions on public gatherings and movement to contain demonstrations. The detention of lawmakers has not deterred opposition parties from pledging continued action in the coming days.

The standoff highlights ongoing friction between opposition blocs and the electoral commission, with the former maintaining that institutional reform and leadership changes are necessary for restoring public confidence in the election system.
