Opposition leader Prof. G.L. Peiris has stressed the need for measured and responsible engagement by the government in addressing the case of Sivarasa Anojan, a Sri Lankan facing capital punishment in Saudi Arabia for allegations linked to a controversial social media post.

Addressing media representatives at an opposition gathering in Colombo, Peiris emphasised that representations made on behalf of nationals in such critical situations require careful consideration and calibrated diplomatic efforts to avoid complications.

The opposition convenor also used the occasion to critique the government's approach to regional and international affairs, specifically raising objections to what he characterised as the administration's handling of Sri Lanka's engagement with the BRICS bloc.

The remarks underscore growing political divisions over how the government manages sensitive consular cases involving Sri Lankan citizens abroad and its broader foreign policy orientation in an increasingly multipolar geopolitical landscape.
