Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the Cockroach Janta Party, on Monday condemned the denotification of Jantar Mantar as an authorized protest venue, cautioning that the move foreshadows broader restrictions on public dissent across India.
DelhiPolice Commissioner Anurag Kumar issued a standing order on October 11 designating Ramlila Maidan, Burari Ground, and CBD Ground in east Delhi as replacement sites for protests and demonstrations. The order effectively removed the iconic New Delhi landmark from its longstanding role as a protest destination.
Dipke characterized the decision as symptomatic of authoritarian governance, arguing that the entire nation would become a de facto protest site if citizens are denied legitimate venues for dissent. "The dictator's problem was never the protest site. It was the very idea of people protesting," he said in a social media post, suggesting the government's underlying objective extends beyond relocating demonstrations.
The opposition figure warned that denotification of Jantar Mantar could presage further attacks on democratic institutions. "Today, Modi denotified Jantar Mantar as a designated protest site. Tomorrow, he will denotify democracy itself," Dipke stated, implying a pattern of incremental restrictions on fundamental freedoms.
