Opposition lawmakers from the INDIA coalition staged a demonstration in Delhi on Thursday, only to be stopped by police before reaching their intended destination at Jantar Mantar. The security cordon was established on Ashoka Road near the Shangri-La Hotel, approximately one kilometre short of the protest site, where buses carrying the opposition delegations were halted.
Police invoked Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) to prevent the opposition leaders from proceeding further. The legal provision was cited as grounds for restricting the march and controlling the gathering in the sensitive area around central Delhi's protest zone.
Following the blockade, Rahul Gandhi, who led the opposition demonstration, took to social media to express defiance. "They may stop the march, but they cannot stop our determination," Gandhi's post conveyed, signalling the opposition's resolve to continue its agitation despite police intervention. The incident reflects ongoing tensions between the opposition and the ruling government over various policy matters.
