Opposition parties in Parliament have launched a coordinated attack on Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suresh Gopi over his commitment to set up an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in his constituency, raising questions about the government's capacity to deliver on the ambitious healthcare promise.
The Congress party, along with the CPI(M) and CPI, have questioned the feasibility of establishing a new AIIMS, arguing that the central government has limited resources and has struggled to complete several ongoing health infrastructure projects across the country.
The opposition lawmakers contended that such major healthcare infrastructure initiatives require substantial financial allocation, specialized technical expertise, and years of planning and construction. They pointed to delays in establishing previous AIIMS facilities as evidence that hasty commitments on such ambitious projects often fail to materialize.
The controversy reflects broader political debate over infrastructure promises made by ruling and opposition parties during election campaigns. While AIIMS facilities are regarded as prestigious medical institutions offering advanced healthcare services, critics argue that establishing new centers requires careful evaluation of demand, funding availability, and administrative capacity.
