Opposition parties demand Election Commission chief's removal over voter deletion row

A coalition of Left parties, the Indian National Congress, the YSR Congress Party, and civil society organisations has launched a coordinated campaign demanding the removal of the Chief Election Commissioner over alleged irregularities in voter registration. The delegations have called for an immediate suspension of the Statistical Information Report, a key document used in electoral processes, pending a comprehensive audit of its findings. Opposition leaders alleged that the deletions disproportionately affect marginalised communities and undermine the democratic process by reducing eligible voters' participation in elections. The groups have demanded restoration of all wrongfully deleted names and implementation of structural reforms to prevent future anomalies. Election Commission officials have not yet responded to the allegations. The matter assumes significance as voter rolls form the foundation of electoral credibility in India's democratic system, with any irregularities potentially casting doubt on election outcomes.
