Opposition parties intensify coordination over election commission chief

Opposition parties across India are accelerating moves to present a united front on key electoral governance issues, with multiple regional leaders engaging in high-level discussions this week. The focus has centered on concerns regarding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and broader election administration reforms. CPM General Secretary M.A. Baby and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee held talks covering potential action against the election commission chief, electoral reform proposals, and strategies for uniting opposition parties. The discussions signal an attempt to bridge traditional political divides on matters of institutional importance. Beyond the communist and Bengali regional parties, outreach letters have been sent to the Aam Aadmi Party, Biju Janata Dal, Bharat Rashtra Samithi, DMK, and Tamil Maanila Congress, among others, to develop a coordinated approach. The opposition bloc, known as the INDIA alliance, is expected to convene a meeting in Delhi in the coming days to finalize joint positions and strategy.
