Opposition seeks President's intervention on voter roll deletions

A delegation of opposition leaders met with President Murmu on Wednesday to lodge formal concerns regarding the deletion of an estimated 133 million voters from electoral rolls. The opposition parties contended that the mass removal of voters represents an irregularity in the electoral process and sought presidential intervention to restore the affected voters.

During the meeting, opposition members, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, presented documentation they claim demonstrates evidence of what they term 'vote chori' or vote theft through the systematic deletion of voter registrations. The delegation argued that such deletions undermine democratic processes and disproportionately affect particular voter segments.

The opposition has demanded that the Election Commission undertake an immediate review of voter roll deletions and reinstate eligible voters removed from the rolls. They contended that electoral authorities should provide transparent explanations for the mass removal of registrations.

The issue of voter roll management has emerged as a contentious political matter, with opposition parties questioning the methodology and transparency of the electoral registration process. Electoral officials have previously attributed some deletions to standard administrative procedures including duplicate entry removals and updates based on death reports and relocations.
