Orang Laut SG launches Clarke Quay pop-up cafe showcasing maritime heritage cuisine

Orang Laut SG has announced the opening of its inaugural pop-up cafe, Terumbu, at Chef X in Clarke Quay Central, beginning October 23 and running through December 26. The venture represents a significant milestone for the organization in bringing the food heritage of Singapore's maritime communities to a wider audience.

The menu will feature traditional dishes reflective of the region's seafaring culture, including specialties such as bubur lambuk tenggiri, a fragrant fish rice porridge steeped in culinary tradition. The offerings have been carefully curated to authentically represent the flavors and techniques passed down through generations within the community.

The three-month residency provides an opportunity for diners to experience the distinct gastronomic identity of the Orang Laut people, whose ancestral ties to the sea have shaped their unique culinary practices. By establishing a presence in the vibrant Clarke Quay precinct, the pop-up aims to foster greater awareness and appreciation for this often-overlooked aspect of Singapore's cultural tapestry.

The initiative aligns with broader efforts to document and sustain the traditions of maritime communities across South and Southeast Asia, many of which face pressures from modernization and changing lifestyles. Terumbu's appearance marks a growing trend of community-led cultural enterprises leveraging the food and beverage sector as a platform for heritage preservation and economic empowerment.
