Oriana Power wins ₹3,870 cr battery storage contracts from Maharashtra utility

Oriana Power has won two battery energy storage system (BESS) projects worth ₹3,870 crore from Maharashtra's state power distributor, marking a significant expansion of grid-scale energy storage capacity in the state. The projects, totalling 900 MW of power capacity and 1,800 MWh of storage, will be developed to support the state's renewable energy integration and grid stability objectives.

Under the terms of the agreements, Oriana Power will operate the battery storage systems for 15 years, providing long-term energy storage services to MSEDCL. The extended contract period provides revenue certainty for the developer while ensuring the utility has reliable storage infrastructure to manage demand fluctuations and support its renewable energy transition.

Battery energy storage systems have become increasingly critical for Indian states seeking to maximize renewable energy utilization while maintaining grid reliability. Maharashtra has been among the leading states in pursuing energy storage capacity to complement its growing solar and wind generation portfolio. The BESS projects are expected to enhance the state's ability to manage peak demand periods and reduce reliance on conventional generation sources.

The contract award reflects growing momentum in India's energy storage sector, driven by falling battery costs and policy support for grid modernization. State distribution companies across the country are progressively investing in storage infrastructure to improve operational efficiency and support their renewable energy commitments under national climate objectives.
