Oriental Mindoro fortifies borders as ASF spreads to neighboring province

CALAPAN CITY — Oriental Mindoro has moved to strengthen its border defenses after African Swine Fever was detected in Occidental Mindoro last week, marking a significant threat to the region's livestock industry.
Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer Vinscent B. Gahol, Acting Provincial Veterinarian Dr. Alfredo Manglicmot, and Provincial Administrator Atty. Earl Ligorio R. Turano announced the implementation of tightened biosecurity measures at provincial checkpoints and entry points.
The measures are designed to prevent the spread of ASF across provincial boundaries through the movement of pigs and pork products. Officials have directed enhanced surveillance protocols and stricter inspections of livestock shipments and agricultural commodities entering Oriental Mindoro from affected areas.
The detection of ASF in neighboring Occidental Mindoro has heightened concerns among provincial authorities and livestock raisers, given the highly contagious nature of the virus and its devastating impact on hog production across the region.
Officials have urged local hog farmers to maintain strict farm biosecurity practices and report any signs of unusual animal illness to provincial veterinary authorities immediately.
