CALAPAN CITY — Nine live pigs destined for San Jose in Occidental Mindoro were seized at a checkpoint in Bulalacao on Tuesday as Oriental Mindoro strengthens safeguards against African swine fever (ASF).

The animals were intercepted at the Milagrosa Animal Quarantine checkpoint during routine inspections as the provincial government implements stricter border controls. Officials have escalated monitoring measures across key transit points to prevent potential disease transmission between provinces.

The action reflects growing concerns over ASF's possible spread in the Mindoro region. Authorities have maintained heightened vigilance following earlier disease incidents in other parts of the country, with particular attention paid to inter-provincial livestock movements.

Provincial veterinary officials are continuing their investigation into the attempted transport. The seized pigs are being held pending further assessment and coordination with relevant agricultural agencies to determine appropriate disposition.
