Oriental Mindoro power grid placed on red alert as demand surges

CALAPAN CITY — The National Transmission Corporation Small Island Grid System Operator placed Oriental Mindoro's power distribution network under red alert twice on Wednesday, October 28, citing a significant gap between available capacity and electricity demand.

The alerts were declared from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and again from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. as the provincial grid struggled to manage peak consumption levels. Red alert status indicates a critical shortage of generating capacity that could lead to rolling blackouts if demand cannot be curtailed or additional power sources activated.

The power crunch underscores mounting energy supply pressures facing Oriental Mindoro, a relatively remote island province whose electricity needs have grown faster than infrastructure expansion. Officials have not detailed the specific factors behind Wednesday's capacity shortfall, though the situation reflects broader power generation challenges affecting the region.

TransCo-SIGSO, which operates the Small Island Grid System covering Oriental Mindoro and other island communities, continues monitoring grid conditions. Residents and businesses are advised to practice energy conservation measures to help stabilize the power system during peak demand periods.
