Oriental Mindoro unveils drought response strategy for food, water security

Governor Humerlito Dolor of Oriental Mindoro has rolled out a provincial action plan designed to safeguard water and food security as El Niño weather patterns take hold. The governor formalized the initiative through Executive Order No. 29, Series of 2026, which was announced on November 3.

The provincial government is prioritizing multiple strategies to mitigate the effects of prolonged drought conditions. Key measures include identifying and developing alternative water sources to supplement existing supplies and maintaining adequate reserves for essential needs.

Additionally, authorities are stockpiling drought-tolerant seed varieties to support local farmers and maintain agricultural productivity despite unfavorable weather conditions. The province is also working to secure food supplies to prevent shortages during the anticipated dry spell.

The executive order reflects growing concern across the Philippines about El Niño's impact on agriculture and water availability. Oriental Mindoro, an agricultural region, faces particular vulnerability to seasonal weather disruptions that can affect crop yields and drinking water access across its municipalities.
