Orkla India chief endorses FSSAI's front-of-pack labelling push

Sanjay Sharma, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Orkla India, has expressed support for the FSSAI's initiative to mandate front-of-pack labelling on food products. Sharma stated that consumers have a fundamental right to access nutritional information about the items they purchase, and that the industry is aligned with the regulator's objective of empowering shoppers to make informed dietary choices.

The executive noted that rising consumer awareness levels necessitate greater transparency from food manufacturers. According to Sharma, the packaged food industry is fully supportive of the FSSAI's regulatory push in this direction and recognises the importance of providing comprehensive product information as knowledge among consumers continues to grow.

Sharma, who is actively engaged with industry body CII on the issue, emphasised that enhanced labelling requirements represent a positive step toward consumer protection. The FSSAI's proposed norms seek to make nutritional content more visible and accessible to shoppers at the point of purchase, moving beyond traditional back-of-pack information currently mandated under food safety standards.
