Osaka, who has been working her way back to competitive tennis, could not contain Pohankova's strong performance on court at the Tokyo tournament. The Slovak teenager's aggressive play and consistency proved too much for the three-time Grand Slam champion to handle over the two-set encounter.
Pohankova broke through in the opening set, taking it 6-3 before pressing her advantage in the second. Though Osaka mounted some resistance in the latter stages, Pohankova held firm to seal the victory at 7-5.
The result marks an early exit for Osaka from one of Asia's premier tennis events. Pohankova's upset victory underscores the emerging talent making its mark on the women's professional circuit, as younger players continue to challenge the established order at tournaments across the region.
The Pan Pacific Open, held annually in Tokyo, remains one of the region's most prestigious tennis competitions, attracting top-ranked players from around the world.
