Outgoing DOTr Chief Lopez Pledges Continued Focus on Commuter Welfare

MANILA — Transportation Secretary Giovanni "Banoy" Lopez formally concluded his tenure at the Department of Transportation on Monday, Oct. 26, leaving behind an agency he has steered since September of the previous year.

During his farewell at the DOTr office, Lopez reiterated his commitment to ensuring that commuters' welfare remains central to policy decisions, even as he transitions to his new role leading the Department of Public Works and Highways under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s directive.

Lopez's appointment to head the public works department marks a significant shift in his portfolio, though his advocacy for public transportation improvements and commuter-centric policies is expected to inform his approach to infrastructure development in the new position.

The outgoing DOTr chief's departure comes amid ongoing efforts to address transportation challenges that have long affected millions of Filipino commuters across the archipelago. His successor at the transportation department has yet to be formally announced.

Lopez's move underscores the administration's effort to realign leadership across key infrastructure and transportation agencies as it pursues broader development goals.
