Authorities across southern ASEAN have detected 1,211 active hotspots as transboundary haze thickens across the region, signaling a worsening air quality crisis. The Department of Environment identified the majority of these fire sources in Indonesia's Kalimantan provinces, areas that have historically served as major contributors to seasonal haze affecting neighbouring countries including Malaysia.

The surge in hotspot activity underscores the persistent challenge of managing agricultural and land-clearing fires during the dry season. These fires, often linked to agricultural expansion and peatland clearing, release massive quantities of smoke and particulate matter that drift across international borders, degrading air quality across a wide geographic area.

Malaysia has been particularly vulnerable to transboundary haze originating from Kalimantan, with previous episodes causing Air Pollutant Index readings to reach hazardous levels in affected regions.
