LEGAZPI CITY — At least 1,477 residents from Albay province continued to shelter in evacuation centers on Saturday, one day after Mayon Volcano unleashed a moderately explosive eruption that triggered mandatory evacuation orders across the region.
The evacuees had been residing within the volcano's six-kilometer permanent danger zone (PDZ) when authorities ordered their immediate relocation to safer areas in response to the eruption. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology and local government units coordinated the large-scale evacuation to minimize casualties and protect vulnerable populations.
Displacement on this scale places considerable strain on local resources, with evacuation centers operating at near capacity in Legazpi City and surrounding municipalities. Provincial officials have appealed for additional support to ensure evacuees receive adequate food, medical services, and temporary shelter as monitoring of volcanic activity continues.
Authorities have maintained heightened alert levels around Mayon, one of the Philippines' most active volcanoes, as scientists monitor seismic activity and gas emissions. Residents within the PDZ have been advised to remain in evacuation centers pending further updates from monitoring agencies.
