Over 1,500 Malaysians held abroad on drug-related charges

According to official records, 381 Malaysian citizens are imprisoned in Indonesia on drug-related charges, making it the country with the highest number of detained Malaysians. China follows closely with 380 detainees, while Singapore holds 310 Malaysians for drug offences. Thailand and Japan account for 102 and 72 cases respectively.

The detention figures highlight the vulnerability of Malaysian nationals to involvement in cross-border drug smuggling operations, particularly across Southeast Asia and into East Asia. Regional law enforcement agencies have intensified efforts to combat the trafficking of controlled substances, resulting in increased arrests of foreign nationals attempting to transport drugs through their territories.

The cases span various drug offences, from possession to trafficking and manufacturing. Many of those detained face lengthy prison sentences under the strict drug laws implemented across the region, with several countries maintaining capital punishment for major trafficking offences.

Malaysian authorities have previously urged citizens to exercise caution when travelling abroad and to be aware of the severe legal consequences associated with drug-related crimes in foreign jurisdictions. The government has also established support mechanisms to assist detained nationals through diplomatic channels and legal representation.
