Over 10 lakh people affected as Ganga breaches flood mark in Bihar

More than 10.26 lakh people across 11 districts in Bihar are grappling with the impact of widespread flooding as the Ganga river surged past its highest flood mark on Saturday morning. The water level at Gandhi Ghat rose by 10 cm, breaching the critical threshold and triggering alerts for potential inundation in low-lying areas around Patna and neighbouring regions. By 10 am, the Ganga was flowing 1 cm above the highest recorded flood mark, according to bulletins from the Water Resources Department.

Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has ordered ministers and senior officials to visit affected areas and maintain close supervision of relief and rescue operations. Officials have been directed to camp in flood-affected zones to ensure the effectiveness of relief measures and monitor the evolving situation as water levels continue their upward trajectory. The state government has appealed to residents to remain cautious and follow official advisories.

BJP national president Nitin Nabin indicated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the state Chief Minister are closely monitoring developments in Bihar. The ongoing heavy rainfall across the state has compounded the crisis, with multiple rivers reportedly flowing above normal levels. Authorities are preparing contingency measures to handle potential secondary impacts as the flood situation remains fluid.
