Over 160 detained as anti-CEC protests enter second day in India

Police detained more than 160 protesters on the second day of demonstrations against the Chief Election Commissioner, continuing a crackdown that saw over 1,000 arrested on the movement's opening day. Among those taken into custody were noted civil rights lawyer Prashant Bhushan and journalist Neha Bora, alongside numerous students, activists and legal professionals who had gathered at protest sites across the country.

Despite the increased police action, demonstrators remained undeterred, with fresh contingents arriving at rally points to voice opposition to the electoral authority's functioning. The sustained participation of lawyers and activists underscored the broad-based nature of the movement, which has drawn support from multiple sections of civil society.

Political activist Yogendra Yadav announced plans to escalate the campaign, calling for a major march scheduled for October 4. The announcement suggested organizers intend to build momentum despite police detentions, with preparations underway for the larger demonstration.

The protests, now in their second consecutive day, reflect growing discontent with the election commission's policies and functioning among sections of Indian civil society. The involvement of legal professionals and public intellectuals has lent credibility to the movement's demands for institutional reforms.
