Over 160 migrants rescued from vessel off Mauritania coast

Mauritanian authorities successfully rescued more than 160 migrants from a vessel off the country's coast, according to regional maritime reports. The boat had departed from Banjul, the capital of The Gambia, and was spotted by coastguard units after approximately eight days at sea.

The rescue operation reflects the continued risks faced by migrants attempting to reach Europe and other destinations via maritime routes from West Africa. Vessels departing from Gambian ports regularly undertake perilous journeys across the Atlantic, often with inadequate safety provisions and overcrowded conditions.
