The Department of Environment and Natural Resources released 170 green sea turtle hatchlings along the shores of Baler, Aurora on Sunday, marking a significant milestone in the country's marine conservation initiatives. The hatchlings, which had been discovered in separate nests within the Aurora Watershed Forest Reserve, were carefully transported to the coast for their entry into the sea.
The release took place at two coastal locations in Barangay Zabali—Sitios Diguisit and Dicasalarin—providing the young turtles optimal conditions for their journey into the ocean. The operation reflects ongoing efforts by environmental agencies to protect endangered sea turtle populations in Philippine waters.
Green sea turtles remain vulnerable to various threats including habitat loss, pollution, and climate change. Conservation programs such as this release underscore the importance of protecting nesting sites and ensuring hatchlings have the best possible chance of survival in their natural marine environment.
The Aurora Watershed Forest Reserve serves as a critical nesting ground for sea turtles in the region. Such protected areas play an essential role in maintaining healthy populations of these marine species, which are important indicators of ocean ecosystem health.
