Over 2 crore voters excluded from Maharashtra's draft electoral roll

Maharashtra's electoral preparedness faces scrutiny as election officials released the draft voter roll, which currently contains 7.71 crore registered voters. The exclusion of over 2 crore individuals from the register raises questions about voter registration coverage in India's second-most populous state.

According to state election authorities, the draft roll comprises 3.95 crore male voters and 3.75 crore female voters. Additionally, 3,087 voters have registered under the third-gender category, reflecting evolving demographic documentation in electoral processes.

The draft electoral roll typically triggers a correction period during which eligible citizens can register as voters or lodge objections against existing entries. Election officials said the public notification period allows residents to verify their registration status and apply for inclusion if they meet eligibility criteria.

Electoral authorities in Maharashtra will scrutinise fresh applications and objections during the designated correction window. Once finalised following this process, the roll will serve as the official voter register for forthcoming elections in the state.
