Over 4.8 million affected as Bihar floods ease; river levels receding
Floodwaters are beginning to recede across Bihar after heavy September rainfall, though nearly 4.9 million people remain affected across 15 districts. Authorities have deployed extensive relief operations including community kitchens and temporary shelters.

Nearly 4.9 million people across 88 blocks in 15 districts of Bihar continue to grapple with flood impacts as water levels in major rivers show signs of receding, officials said on Sunday. The state received 111.7 mm of rainfall during September, approximately 13 per cent above the normal average for the month.
According to the Disaster Management Department, the worst-affected districts are Patna, Bhojpur, Saran, Vaishali, Bhagalpur, Begusarai and Araria. Multiple rivers including the Kosi, Ganga, Burhi Gandak, Punpun, Bagmati and Ghaghra had been flowing above danger levels at various locations, though the receding trend offers cautious hope to affected communities.
To manage the humanitarian crisis, the state administration has established 1,257 community kitchens and set up 13 relief camps in affected areas. These facilities are providing essential accommodation and food support to displaced residents as cleanup and recovery operations continue across the flood-ravaged regions.
