Over 7,200 CBI corruption cases await trial, reveals CVC report

According to a recently released Central Vigilance Commission report, the Indian criminal justice system is grappling with a substantial accumulation of corruption cases investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation that remain pending trial. The 7,200-plus cases represent a critical bottleneck in prosecuting financial crimes and misconduct across government and public sector institutions.

The report breaks down the pendency timeline across three categories. Nearly 3,854 appeals and revisions have been languishing in the system for between five and ten years, while 1,987 cases have been pending for over two but fewer than five years. An additional 2,995 cases remain stuck in proceedings for less than two years, indicating a multi-layered congestion across the judicial pipeline.

The accumulation of cases reflects broader challenges within India's judicial infrastructure, where resource constraints and procedural complexities frequently contribute to extended delays. Corruption investigations, often involving complex documentation and multiple accused parties, typically require considerable time to navigate through appellate and revision processes before final adjudication.

Experts have flagged the backlog as a significant impediment to accountability and governance reform efforts. The extended pendency periods can undermine the deterrent effect of anti-corruption prosecutions and test public confidence in institutional mechanisms designed to combat financial misconduct. Clearing the backlog remains a priority concern for both the CVC and law enforcement agencies seeking to strengthen India's anti-corruption framework.
