Over two tonnes of banned polythene lunch sheets destroyed in Sri Lanka

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has destroyed a significant haul of banned polythene lunch sheets totalling 2,040kg, marking a major enforcement action against the use of prohibited packaging materials in the country.

The confiscated items were seized during two coordinated raids carried out jointly by the CAA and partner agencies. The operations targeted the distribution and use of single-use polythene lunch sheets, which remain prohibited under Sri Lankan environmental and consumer protection regulations.

The destruction of the seized materials demonstrates the government's commitment to enforcing bans on problematic plastic products that pose environmental risks and contamination hazards. Polythene lunch sheets have been restricted due to concerns over their impact on food safety and the broader environment.

The CAA continues to conduct regular compliance operations targeting retailers, manufacturers, and distributors who violate regulations governing prohibited packaging materials. Authorities urge businesses to ensure full compliance with existing bans and to use only approved, environmentally safe alternatives for food packaging.
