Overgrown trails trap six hikers on Gunung Gerah overnight

GERIK — Six hikers faced an unplanned overnight stay on Gunung Gerah in Perak after finding their descent routes obstructed by overgrown vegetation and fallen debris, the Perak Fire and Rescue Department said on Monday. The hikers had set out on what they expected to be a day trip but were forced to camp on the mountain when they encountered impassable sections of the hiking trails. The trails, which see infrequent use, had become increasingly blocked over time due to natural overgrowth and lack of regular maintenance. The fire department mounted a search and rescue operation after the group failed to return at the expected time. Rescue personnel successfully located the hikers and provided assistance in safely guiding them down the mountain. The incident highlights the hazards posed by poorly maintained hiking routes in Perak's mountainous regions, particularly those that receive limited foot traffic. Authorities have not indicated whether trail maintenance work is planned for the area.
