The Parliamentary Accounts Committee has sought answers from the Centre and state governments on irregularities flagged by the Comptroller and Auditor General in SC scholarship distribution schemes, expressing concern over the slow pace of remedial action.
During questioning, committee members pressed the Secretary of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment on why action-taken reports addressing CAG audit observations had not been filed as mandated. The audit had identified multiple fraud markers and implementation gaps in the administration of scholarship programs meant to benefit Scheduled Caste students.
The ministry acknowledged the oversight and provided an assurance that comprehensive action-taken reports would be submitted to the PAC within four weeks. These reports are expected to detail corrective measures initiated in response to the audit observations and the status of their implementation across states.
The PAC's intervention underscores growing scrutiny of scholarship distribution mechanisms, particularly in schemes intended to support socially disadvantaged groups. The audit findings had raised questions about oversight mechanisms and the adequacy of existing safeguards against misappropriation of funds.
The committee is expected to review the submitted reports and may initiate further proceedings if the proposed remedial actions are deemed insufficient or if implementation remains delayed.
