Paddy Marketing Board secures 45,362 MT during latest Yala season

The Paddy Marketing Board has successfully purchased 45,362 metric tonnes of paddy during the current Yala season procurement programme, according to official figures released by the board. The acquisition forms part of the state institution's regular operations to support local rice farmers and maintain adequate grain stocks for the nation's food security.

The Yala season, which runs from May to September, represents a critical period for paddy cultivation in Sri Lanka's principal rice-growing regions. The board's purchase programme during this season aims to provide farmers with reliable market access and guaranteed prices for their harvest, thereby encouraging continued investment in rice production.

The procurement figures reflect ongoing efforts by the Paddy Marketing Board to fulfil its mandate of stabilising prices in the domestic rice market. By purchasing directly from farmers during the harvest season, the board helps prevent price volatility that can disadvantage both producers and consumers.

The collected paddy will be processed and distributed through the board's established supply chains to meet domestic demand. The volume procured during the Yala season contributes significantly to national rice reserves and supports the government's objective of ensuring food self-sufficiency in the staple crop.
